Guest: Graduate Painting Seminar: Pictorial Spaces Between Abstraction and Empathy
I recently conducted a graduate seminar for students in the Neue Architekturschule Siegen (NAS) (New Architecture School Siegen) painting seminar “Malerei. Bildräume zwischen Abstraktion und Einfühlung” (Painting. Pictorial Spaces Between Abstraction and Empathy).
The seminar began with a lecture examining my artistic work and methods, focusing on the complex influences that shape artistic practice—from birth culture and sense of place to artistic heroes, education, and contemporary media. Through exploring these questions, I shared insights into how such factors shape both conceptual approach and technical methodology in painting.
Following the lecture, I led a painting workshop where students could explore these concepts through their own studio practice.
The session provided graduate students with both theoretical context and practical application, encouraging them to consider how personal and cultural influences inform artists practices.
